Week 14: Library Thing

Week 14: Library Thing. I chose Shelfari to list the books I have read, tag them and give the books a thumbs up or not. I really like the idea of listing all the books I have read so I don't get confused about what I have read and what I haven't read. Plus, Shelfari lists all the books by an author. It is helpful to find more books to read by an author I like. I think this website will be useful to me in the future.

23 Things Kansas Week 13 Slide Sharing

Week 13 Slide Sharing was very interesting and easy. I tried the Slideshare.net but it wasn't what I was looking for. I wanted to use photos that I had saved and do a slide show. Animoto worked very well and I liked the music you could use with the pictures.

Week Ten: Video on the Web

Week Ten of 23 Things Kansas is Video on the Web. I did a video of Kyler Carpenter doing his songs for storytime. He will also use this video on our library website as an example of what a person can do for a storytime. I had to use Media Player to upload the video. Uploading to YouTube was not difficult at all which surprised me.

Instant Messaging

Week Nine - Instant Messaging for 23ThingsKs. I signed up on Meebo for Yahoo, Facebook instant messaging. I have done instant messaging on Facebook and thought that it was useful because you had an immediate reply. We also have trillion installed on our computers but I haven't used it much. I can see if a person was at their desk most of the day instant messaging would have value. Much quicker than email and more like a conversation.

Week 8 Cloud Computing

I joined Elaine O'Gara on her blog to do an activity. She wanted other people to list funny experiences we have had being librarians. Of course, there are many that have happened over the 19 years I have worked in libraries. My latest experience was working with a book store ordering books for an author visit. The manager who had been working with me told me at the last minute he had never talked to me or gotten any emails from me. I was sure the guy had gone completely senile. He did order some books that he got shipped overnight and there were books for sale at 1 of the 3 sessions. At the time I was frustrated and furious but now I can laugh. Lesson learned.

Twitter

Week 7 - Twitter
I was finally able to follow some people on Twitter. They are David King, Topeka Library & 23ThingsKs.

Twitter

Week Seven of 23 Things Kansas is Twitter. At first it sounded like it would be very easy. Easy to sign up but difficult to follow someone. Hopefully, Becky has some hints to follow.

Week 6: Tagging & Social Bookmarking

I have opened a Delicious account and entered several bookmarks of sites that I like to visit. This is a good website to organize all of your favorite websites in one area.

RSS Feeds

Week Five - RSS Feeds.

I have heard of these feeds but didn't have a clue what they were. I have picked bloglines & Google reader because they were easy to subscribe to and looked interesting. I didn't pick Feed My Inbox because I didn't want more emails to wade through.

Experience with Flickr

Week 4 in 23 thingskansas - Learning to Navigate Flickr. Not too scary, rather straight forward and lots of things to see. I found a picture of an owl which came from the Stone Nature Center and is very cool. Of course, I would gravitate toward animal pictures.

Infopeople - Revitalizing the Library Experience

Webinar that I listened to on 1-26-10 by Joan Williams & George Needham.

Libraries should be concerned with the patrons needs and wants. Joan & George like TSCPL and how they are operating.

Libraries need more self-service because most patrons are independent. Studies show men generally don't talk to the library staff but women do. The patron's library experience doesn't always involve library staff.

Library should set goals:
1. Set up environment for independent users. Ex. merchandising signs, tools not rules
2. Layered service - design service usually by age. Ex. toddler computer room
3. B-tag - like a barcode but can be read with a cell phone.
4. Remote service delivery
5. Hospitality - treat patron like a guest.
6. Intercept - 1st welcome for patron. Triage - help patron figure out where they should go. Follow up.
7. Makeover - keep library tidy
8. Human strategy - human friendly environment, staff have empathy for patron
9. Many new forms to convey information that can be used by library. Not just about books but learning.
10.Make new alliances (former term partnerships)
11.In this recession libraries should play well with other agencies.
12.Library should represent the community on the web with local information. Adaptability is the key to success
13.'Hype local' - library should look like the community (not way out architecture that doesn't look like the rest of the town). Library should reflect the community with books, programs Ex - high school year books.
14.There should be a purpose when making a change
15.Staff should be able to make a judgement call

Tribute to a Daughter

A daughter was awarded the 2010 Excellence in Nursing. How far she has come in her 26 years. The tribute that was given to her used words like responsible, caring, good worker and the "go to" person. Great words given to a person who has always stuggled with words. Reading did not come easy, spelling was difficult and tests were a nightmare. I asked her one time what she would have done if her mother hadn't pushed & shoved her through school. Her answer, "I would have quit." She has come far. She is now a confident, caring person who has found her niche in life and I am proud.
